STEAM-Based Learning Space

In collaboration with students from Forsyth Satellite Academy, a transfer high school in the Lower East Side catering to students requiring more specialized learning, we embarked on redesigning their educational space with STEAM-based learning in focus. Housed in a century-old building, the site serves students from across the city. Our aim was to foster creativity, teamwork, and adaptability within the environment. Central to our design concept was the exploration of collective memory, materialized in a "memory wall" system featuring layered slots for students to archive and exhibit their work. Additionally, we reconfigured hallway circulation and established a new central core fostering serendipitous interactions. Adjacent to this core lies the "memory lounge," a flexible, student-led space promoting comfort and agency through a frosted glass and curtain system, encouraging personalized learning experiences. Moreover, we designed flexible classrooms where the built environment acts as a teacher itself. By integrating materials such as cork walls, whiteboard desks, movable walls, and modular furniture, we provided teachers with the freedom to configure their classrooms in rows, groups, or even joined for workshop environments, enhancing versatility and accommodating diverse teaching methods.
